Unleashing Your Creativity: How to Reconnect with Your Inner Artist
Have you ever said to yourself, “I’m just not creative”? If so, you’re not alone. But here’s the truth: creativity lives in all of us. It might not always look like painting or writing poetry, but it’s there, waiting to be awakened.
In this episode, I want to invite you back to your creative self. Whether you’re feeling stuck, uninspired, or unsure how to begin, this is your gentle nudge to loosen the grip of perfectionism, reclaim playfulness, and start exploring your soul’s expression again.
Creativity is a Mirror to Your Soul
Creativity isn’t about being “good” at art, it’s about expressing your inner world. Whether it’s through journaling, movement, doodling, or something totally unique, creative practices let us access thoughts and feelings words can’t always reach.
When you allow yourself to create freely, without judgement or agenda, you begin to uncover hidden insights, shift stuck emotions, and connect more deeply with who you really are.
The Magic of Surrendering the Outcome
A few weeks ago, my kids and I were crafting Easter bonnets. I had no idea what we were going to make. Usually, I’m brimming with ideas, but this time, I was stuck. So I surrendered. I dug through our overflowing craft drawer, found cake liners, shredded paper, some little birds and eggs and just started.
We coloured, cut, glued, and made a glorious creative mess.
In the end, it wasn’t Pinterest-perfect. But my kids said it was one of the best afternoons they’ve ever had. And I felt it too, that joy of creating just to create, not to impress or get it right.
That experience reminded me: creativity is not about the outcome. It’s about the process. The presence. The connection.
What Are Your Creative Blocks Trying to Tell You?
So many of us hold back because we fear we’re not “good enough” or don’t know where to begin. But those creative blocks? They’re symbolic. They’re often mirrors of what’s going on in our lives.
Ask yourself:
- Do you feel stuck in any area of your life right now?
- Where are you waiting for perfection before you start?
- What emotions might be hiding behind your resistance to creating?
These questions make great journaling prompts and just might unlock a creative shift.
Creativity is a Form of Self-Care
Engaging in creative practices, whether painting, cooking, dancing, or even rearranging furniture—creates space for self-reflection, emotional release, and new perspective.
It teaches us that there’s always more than one way to look at a situation. Just like those optical illusions where you see either an old woman or a young one , both perspectives are there. Creativity invites us to see more than what’s obvious.
Rediscovering the Joy of Play
As adults, we often forget how to play. But watch any child and you’ll see creativity in action: spontaneous, fearless, joyful.
Play is not frivolous, it’s sacred. It reconnects us to freedom, possibility, and flow. And when we give ourselves permission to play, we begin to remember who we really are.
So ask yourself: When was the last time I created something purely for fun?
Tools to Break Through Creative Blocks
If you’re feeling creatively stuck, here are two beautiful tools to try:
- The Creative Whack Pack (by Roger von Oech):
These cards are like creativity-boosting prompts. I use the app version, and it’s great when I need a fresh perspective or a nudge out of a mental rut. - The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron:
This book changed my life. One of the core practices, Morning Pages, involves writing three stream-of-consciousness pages every morning. No editing, no agenda. It’s like a mental declutter that clears the way for creative energy to flow in.
Creativity is a Portal
Whether you’re painting, journaling, collaging, or simply colouring with your kids, creativity can become a sacred space. A place to pause. A place to play. A place to hear your soul whisper.
It’s not about producing something perfect. It’s about reconnecting with the part of you that knows how to feel, explore, and express.
